Hello, may name is David Hellyer and amongst other things (like being a husband, dad, friend of Jesus, bonsai enthusiast, sneaker freak and Tottenham Hotspur fan) I'm a puppeteer and puppet builder. I run workshops and teach puppetry as well as performing and building puppets. After performing with puppets for 15 years I started to build puppets seriously in 2005 which is when Hellyer's Puppet Workshop was born.
I've been performing with puppets since I was 10 years old, but can remember playing with glove puppets as a child much younger than that.
My puppetry life changed at 15 when I started performing in public a lot more and I was invited to go out to Chicago, USA to an international puppetry festival. I was able to receive puppetry training and compete against other puppeteers and I was completely blown away when I won 1st prize in a competition I entered on my own (competing against performance teams of up to 4 puppeteers).
At 16 I started performing puppets on the streets, and as a result was asked to teach at a national puppetry festival in the UK. This was the start of my workshop leading experience, and in the 15+ years since then I have taught hundreds of puppetry workshops all over the UK and overseas.
One of the best things about getting involved in the wonderful world of pupptry has been meeting loads of people and making new friends. Here you can see just a few people I have met over the past few years. I hope that in the years to come I will continue to meet fascinating creative people who are interested in puppetry... who knows, maybe you'll be one of those people?!
To be fair these photos won't help you gain any insight about my puppetry or my puppet building... but they might help you get to know me a little bit. Enjoy :)
